The immutable nature of Divine Scripture is a cornerstone of Christian doctrine. An upcoming publication by a venerable conservative Christian scholar is generating considerable discussion within the LGBTQ community, yet the response diverges from the anticipations of many church circles. Richard Hays, renowned for his 1996 exposition on New Testament ethics, previously adhered to a conventional interpretation of Biblical teachings on same-sex relationships. However, after nearly three decades, Hays has revised his stance, acknowledging a misinterpretation of the Scriptural inclusivity of LGBTQ relationships. You can read more from this link which is liberal-leaning but has the details…
This shift in perspective is being acclaimed by liberal theologians and members of the LGBTQ community as a significant milestone in the affirmation of same-sex relationships, challenging traditional ecclesiastical viewpoints. Despite these evolving interpretations, the foundational principle remains that the Church's doctrine is not subject to modification for the sake of cultural acceptance. The constancy of God's Word is underscored by passages such as Psalm 119:138, which emphasizes the righteousness and unwavering truth of divine decrees:
Psa 119:138 Thou hast commanded thy testimonies in righteousness and very faithfulness.
Adam Clarke, an eminent British theologian of the 18th and 19th centuries, opined that all divine emanations reflect God's inherent perfection. Similarly, Proverbs 19:16 cautions against neglecting commandments, linking spiritual diligence with the preservation of one's soul.
Pro 19:16 He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his soul: but he that is careless of his ways shall die.
The current trend of increasing Biblical illiteracy and the cultural drift from scriptural truth portend a broader acceptance of these revised interpretations as progressive enlightenment. This perception echoes the misjudged advancements claimed during the Enlightenment periods of the 16th and 17th centuries. Despite historical and contemporary claims of evolving enlightenment, the enduring truth remains: God's Word is unchanging.
I like your comment that “God’s word does not change.” We have to remember,Jesus didn’t change to truth to be popular.
Our church was about to start a Marriage class and deleted a popular publication of a husband and wife team. Both had popular ministries of their own. The week before the start of the class, the husband was found to be involved in homosexual activities to include with a minor. I am proud that our pastor said we would not be using that material.
Thank you for standing up for the truth.
